Date Night on the Peninsula: Dinner, Then a Comedy Show
The default Peninsula date night is dinner and a movie, or a forty-minute drive to the city. Here is the version where you eat somewhere good, walk to a bar, and watch comics from the San Francisco clubs for free. One plan per town, all of them under an hour from doors to home.
The shape of the night
Peninsula Comedy showcases run about ninety minutes. Free shows seat first come, first seated, so the move is to finish dinner thirty minutes before showtime and claim a table. Nothing has a drink minimum. Plan on a drink each and a few dollars for the comics, which still lands under what two movie tickets cost.
Burlingame: the one where dinner is the show
Stand-Up & Sushi at Barracuda on Primrose Road is the easiest date night on this list because you do not move. Book a table for dinner, eat, and the room turns into the comedy show around you once the kitchen winds down. The bar stays open through the sets. If you want a walk afterward, Burlingame Avenue is one block over. 21+.
San Mateo: cocktails and samosas
Sky Lounge on East 3rd Avenue is a cocktail lounge with an Indian restaurant next door, so order food through to the show. Downtown San Mateo has dozens of restaurants within a few blocks if you would rather eat first, and the Caltrain station is two blocks away for the ride home. Park in the garages on 2nd or 4th Avenue.
Redwood City: the early night
Secret Sauce Comedy at The Sandwich Spot on Broadway has doors at seven and a show at seven-thirty, which makes it the pick for a weeknight when you still want to be home by ten. It is a sandwich shop, so eat there or walk Broadway first. Redwood City Caltrain is a five-minute walk and the downtown garages are right there.
San Carlos: beer flight, then a lineup
Ales & Tales at Blue Oak Brewing is a brewery night: long tables, a flight of house beer, and a full showcase in the event space. For a bar version, The Rail on El Camino does cocktails and bar food with the show in the main room. Both are free. Laurel Street, the main downtown strip, is a short drive if you want a sit-down dinner first.
Belmont: the late one
For a night that starts late, The Midnight Mic at Marvin Gardens on Old County Road runs after nine with a dozen-plus comics and a bar crowd. The Lariat Tavern on El Camino is the earlier, rowdier option. Eat before you go; these are bars, not restaurants. Both are free and 21+.
Three rules
- Sit where you can see the mic. Bar rooms are not raked. The front half is the show; the back half is the bar.
- Phones dark, voices down. Comics talk to the crowd. If you are chatting, you are in the set.
- Tip at the end. The comics played for free. A few dollars each from the room is what keeps the night existing.
Every room here is adult material and most are 21+. Check the show card for the age note, and check the this weekend page for what is on tonight.
